Vaccine manufacturer AstraZeneca has donated £250,000 to the East of England Ambulance Service (EEAST) - to assist with the training of the next generation of paramedics.

The funding will pay for a degree apprenticeship for ten trainee paramedics across the East.

The scheme is a two year course run by the University of Cumbria which allows trainees the chance to work on the frontline while earning a degree.

Chris McGregor, head of education and training at EEAST, said: “We are extremely grateful to AstraZeneca for the donation of the apprenticeship levy and partnership working is something we very much embrace at EEAST."

“The paramedic degree apprenticeship that we run with the University of Cumbria will play a key part in our workforce planning for the future so ensure we have a strong pipeline of staff becoming paramedics.”

Kim Hardman, Director UK Apprenticeships, AstraZeneca said: “We are delighted and very proud to be able to support EEAST with a donation from the AstraZeneca levy fund."

"As a leading life science organisation in the UK we want to inspire the next generation of scientists by supporting STEM investment at all levels.

"After seeing the benefits apprentices have brought to our own organisation, we were very keen to support EEAST with the development of its own workforce into paramedics.”
