The UK's first Big Brother winner Craig Phillips joined Fleur East, James and Matt on Hits Radio, to talk about his experience in the house 23 years ago!

In the years since he appeared on, and won the first season of the show, the Big Brother houses have changed a lot, with Craig admitting that the house he lived in was 'damp' and 'falling apart'.

Speaking to Fleur and the team, Craig said: "The (2023) house looks fantastic, when I look at that and compare it to the house that we lived in, which was cold, damp, dirty, falling apart... Obviously, these are only temporary structures which are built there, but this one, is luxury."

He continued: "It was even smelling by the time I left after 64 days! It needed a good makeover, that's for sure."

Craig was crowned winner of the show back in 2000, and despite spending 64 days in the famous Big Brother house, he revealed that he didn't actually get to go home straight away.

Craig explained: "I was the last person to know how big Big Brother had become in that summer of 2000, and I walked out the door to just this explosion of a whirlwind, of a life-changing (situation)."

Craig continued: "I was only in the house for 64 days... I didn't actually return home for another 97 days after that. I was chaperoned with bodyguards, drivers, press officers, agents... and it was just morning, noon and night from media appointments, to award ceremonies, charity work, (and) personal appearances."

He added: "It was just a rollercoaster, but what an amazing experience, it really was."

After a five-year hiatus, Big Brother has now started for the first time on ITV, hosted by AJ Odudu and Will Best. The show was recently praised as for the first time ever, the housemates talked about their pronouns in an open conversation, following housemate Hallie opening up to her housemates that she's a transgender woman.
