A teenage boy has been sentenced after pleading guilty to stabbing another teenager during an altercation in Congleton.
The boy, who cannot be named for legal reasons, admitted to wounding without intent and appeared at Cheshire Youth Court on Monday (14 April). He was handed a 12-month referral order and a restraining order preventing him from contacting the victim.
The incident took place on the evening of Friday (17 January), near Tesco in the West Heath area. During the altercation, the 15-year-old victim was stabbed in the back, sustaining a serious injury that required hospital treatment.
Despite a thorough investigation, the weapon was never recovered. The boy denied stabbing the victim, but medical evidence confirmed the wound was consistent with a knife injury.
Detective Sergeant Tom Binder said: “Thankfully, while the injury was serious, it was not life-threatening and the victim is making a good recovery. This level of violence is extremely rare in Congleton and has understandably shocked the local community.”
In response, local police have stepped up knife crime education efforts: “We already educate young people about the dangers of knife crime, but following this incident, we brought in an external company to deliver additional prevention education to all pupils, supported by neighbourhood officers,” DS Binder added.
“We’ll continue working closely with schools to make sure this kind of behaviour remains a rarity in Congleton.”
