Wigan Athletic have sacked boss Gary Caldwell after 18 months in charge of the Championship side.

The ex-Latics and Scotland defender was appointed manager in April 2015, winning the League One title in his first season.

"I feel that we need to act now in the best long-term interests of the club," said chairman David Sharpe.

The thirty-four-year-old signed for the Latics in January 2010, playing 111 times for Wigan and captaining the side that won the FA Cup in 2013 and survived two Premier League great escapes.

“It’s undoubtedly the toughest decision I’ve had to make since becoming Chairman.”

Caldwell was unable to rescue the Latics from relegation in 2015, but led the club during a twenty-match unbeaten run during his first full season in charge, achieving Championship promotion on the sides first attempt.

Wigan now sit twenty-third in the Championship, five points from the bottom after failing to win in their past four games.

Former MK Dons manager Karl Robinson and Ryan Giggs lead the race to replace Caldwell at the DW Stadium.
