One last match for Schweinsteiger
The German Football Association has granted the Schweinsteiger a farewell match in this month’s friendly against Finland in Monchengladbach.
Bastian Schweinsteiger has been granted one last match before retiring from international football.
The out-of-favour Manchester United midfielder has been allowed to make one final international appearance for the German football team despite announcing his retirement after Euro 2016.
The German Football Association (DFB) has granted the 32-year-old a farewell match in this month’s friendly against Finland. The game, in Monchengladbach on August 31st, is set to be an official send-off to the midfielder after 12 years playing for Germany in which he made 120 appearances.
It's going to be a special evening for me in Monchengladbach,'' the 32-year-old told the DFB website.
I have a lot to thank the DFB and the fans in Germany for. I am really looking forward to this opportunity to play for Germany one last time.''
Schweinsteiger has had an incredible career whilst playing for Germany including leading his country to a World Cup victory in 2014 as well as being part of the Bayern Munich team in in 2013 that won the Champion’s League.
This match has come at a good time as Schweinsteiger seems to have been left out of Manchester United’s first team which was picked by new manager Jose Mourinho. Although he has come under criticism from Schweinsteiger’s old club Bayern Munich, Mourinho has defended this decision by saying that he only wants to work with 23 outfield players.
However, Schweinsteiger has been very dignified with the whole situation by tweeting his support for the team during United’s 3-1 win against Bournemouth on Sunday.
Whereas the end of his international career is more definite, his role at Manchester United is still uncertain as Schweinsteiger continues to train with the Reds’ reserve side.
