Sheffield Wednesday learn punishment for unpaid wages

Wednesday have been hit with a limit on how many players they can sign

Sheffield Wednesday have been handed a three window fee restriction by the EFL, after the club failed to pay players and staff for 30 days.

Both club and owner Dejphon Chansiri were charged over a failure to pay wages for May, after previous payment issues in April.

This latest punishment will cover the summer transfer window, as well as the two windows following in the winter and next summer.

The fee restriction prevents them from signing a player permanently or on loan where the transfer or loan involves a fee.

Those liabilities to their players led to a transfer embargo being imposed, under which Wednesday can only "staff up" to a maximum of 23 professional players.

The embargo would lift if and when the club pay those liabilities.

In a statement released earlier, a spokesperson for Wednesday said: “The Club has notified the EFL of its intention to appeal this decision and this will be heard in due course."

“Separately, on 3 June 2025, the EFL issued charges against the Club and owner Mr Dejphon Chansiri in respect of non-payment of Player wages in March 2025 and May 2025."

"This matter is being considered by an Independent Disciplinary Commission, and because of the ongoing proceedings, the League is unable to comment further at this time.”

Wednesday finished 12th in the Championship last season - and manager Danny Rohl has been linked with a move away during the summer.

Dejphon Chansiri has long faced calls from fans to sell the club.
