A robber who snatched an elderly woman's handbag in Sheffield, leaving her seriously injured, has been jailed.

43 year old Adam Taylor, of Wincobank Close, targeted the 78 year old victim on Shiregreen Lane just after 11am on November 5 last year.

Taylor grabbed the handbag, leaving his victim unconscious, before running off and throwing the bag into a nearby field.

He stole her bank card and £50 in cash.

The bag and purse were later recovered, with Taylor being arrested in short order after being trace via CCTV.

After initially refusing to answer in a police interview Taylor admitted robbery at Sheffield Crown Court.

He's been jailed for four years eight months and ordered to pay a surcharge of £228.

Detective Sergeant Rob Zarchi, of South Yorkshire Police, said: "Taylor's cowardly actions in November of last year were truly despicable. He targeted an elderly woman in broad daylight and left her unconscious in the street, showing absolutely no regard for her welfare.

"I'd like to thank every member of the public who stopped to help the victim in the immediate aftermath of what was a truly upsetting situation."

"I'd also like to say thank you to the person who helped us identify Taylor as the offender through our media appeal.

"I'm pleased Taylor will now be spending time behind bars and hope the sentence handed down to him will give the victim some form of closure and enable her to move on from this horrific ordeal."
