A Rotherham man who held staff at a shop at knifepoint, while covering his face with a tea towel in an ill-fated bid to avoid detection, has been jailed.

44 year old Christopher Rowlinson, of Town Lane in Wingfield, will serve a three year eight month sentence following the incident on St John's Green, Kimberworth, on March 26.

He stole £900 from the till after threatening staff.

Police managed to track his movements after leaving the shop on CCTV, later finding clothes and the tea-towel he'd disposed of after the raid.

Rowlinson was linked to the crime through forensic analysis.

Detective Inspector Lucy Garside, of South Yorkshire Police, said:

"Hard-working members of our community should not expect threats or fear of violence in their places of work.

"Rowlinson showed no remorse for his actions or how they would impact staff and will now, quite rightly, spend time behind bars.

"I am proud of the thorough investigation my officers carried out in the days following this incident in particular the OIC, Detective Constable Hannah Mills.

"Her quick work ensured a dangerous and persistent criminal has been taken off the streets of South Yorkshire."
