Seven arrests made after fights in Rotherham street

A total of seven people have been arrested, after police were called to two altercations in the same area of Rotherham yesterday.

The incidents have led to patrols being stepped up, with South Yorkshire Police allowed to use additional powers to tell people to leave the area.

Officers were first called to Ferham Park Avenue at 3:37pm yesterday, after reports of a fight.

Four people were arrested with three suffering minor injuries.

The suspects in the first incident were:

  • A 31-year-old man arrested on suspicion of assault causing grievous bodily harm
  • A 46-year-old was arrested on suspicion of affray
  • A 25-year-old woman was arrested on suspicion of assaulting an emergency worker.
  • A 20-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of a racially aggravated public order offence.

The 31 and 46 year olds remain in police custody.

Police were called to another disturbance on the same road at around 10:30pm, finding a man had suffered a knife wound.

Three further arrests were made at the scene, including:

  • A 43-year-old man on suspicion of assault causing grievous bodily harm, affray and possessing a bladed article.
  • A 24-year-old man on suspicion of possessing an offensive weapon.
  • A 20-year-old man on suspicion of assaulting an emergency worker.

All three remain in custody.

South Yorkshire Police Chief Inspector James Bennett said:

"This order has been put in place in prevent any further disorder and keep the public safe. We are working hard to investigate these incidents and will provide updates when we can.

"There will be a heightened police presence in the area today, with local neighbourhood officers conducting proactive high-visibility patrols.
