A Rotherham man has been jailed for seven and a half years for killing his passenger in a crash in 2023.

Emergency services were called to a collision involving a VW Passat on Kimberworth Road on the evening of November 26.

The driver, 27 year old Dean Rowbottom of South Street, was over the limit and had hit several parked cars along the road.

A 47 year old woman, who was in his car, was fatally injured.

Rowbottom admitted a charge of causing death by dangerous driving at Sheffield Crown Court in March.

Sergeant John Taylor, of South Yorkshire Police, said:

“Rowbottom's choice to get into his car and drive it that night after drinking over the limit for driving was reckless and resulted in the loss of an innocent life.

"A family suffered the devastating and unnecessary death of a loved one and I hope this serves as a reminder to all drivers that drinking and driving is extremely dangerous. The consequences can be catastrophic, it doesn't just put your own life at risk but that of your loved ones and others.

"I am pleased that Rowbottom will now face considerable time behind bars for that fateful decision he made."
