A dog has died and a woman has been injured in what police are calling a 'horrendous attack' involving another dog in Rotherham.

The woman was walking her pet Frenchie on Laudsdale Road at around 11pm last night when she was set upon by another bull type dog.

She was hurt as she attempted to get the animal away from her pet, which was fatally injured.

Armed police arrived at the scene and managed to seize the dog. They are now investigating exactly how it got loose.

Leading the work on dangerous dogs, Chief Inspector Emma Cheney said: “This is an horrendous attack that has killed an innocent dog and my thoughts are with its owner.

“Children were close by to this and witnessed the attack, but the reality is this could have been a fatality involving a child.

“We continue to see and respond to dangerous dogs posing a risk in our communities and something must change. It will only be a matter of time before someone is killed or seriously hurt, and owners must act.”
