Over 170 South Yorkshire Police officers have taken part in a major operation in Barnsley, resulting in 11 arrests and over £160,000 in drugs being seized.

The latest edition of the force's Operation Duxford was held Wednesday (August 6), with a focus on tackling issues like organised crime, drug dealing, anti social behaviour and domestic violence.

Eight raids were carried out, with two cannabis farms being located at different properties in Stairfoot and Royston - containing a combined total of 200 plants.

In Grimethorpe 3kg of cannabis was seized, along with 1.5kg of Class A drugs worth an estimated £55,000.

10 weapons were seized including a zombie knife, an air gun and a meat cleaver.

11 arrests were made for offences including possession with intent to supply, being involved in the supply of Class B drugs, cultivation of cannabis, failing to stop and failing to appear in court.

Barnsley Superintendent Mark James said: "Yesterday saw our biggest Op Duxford results, in relation to drugs supply, our district has seen in a long time."

"This would not have happened without the support from our residents and local communities.

"The information and intelligence you provide us helps us take these extremely harmful substances off the streets and put those responsible behind bars.

"We know that the supply of drugs is linked to serious and violent organised crime, which causes upheaval to those living in our local communities.

"We deliberately targeted four organised crime groups with our activity yesterday, disrupting their networks and supply.

"I hope the results show our residents that we do not tolerate the supply of Class A drugs in Barnsley and will continue to work hard to eliminate this threat."
