The Metro Mayor for South Yorkshire insists it'll 'take time' for people to notice the impact of the Labour government.

Today marks a year since they won the General Election - with Keir Starmer replacing Conservative Rishi Sunak as Prime Minister.

Oliver Coppard says noticeable changes were never going to happen overnight:

“What I think we are seeing now is the government coming out with significant funding packages and support for key sectors and industries.

“South Yorkshire’s just been given £1.5 billion from the government for transport going forward from 2027 onwards.

“These first 12 months have had their ups and downs, but it’s been a difficult inheritance – that’s not an excuse – it’s just the reality.

“I work with the government day in, day – I see what they’re trying to do – some of that stuff takes a long time to implement.

“Let’s give this government a chance to do the right thing.

“When they’re not doing the right thing for South Yorkshire, I’ll call them out on it.

“However, I think right now we should give them our support, give them a bit of time, and give them the opportunity to invest in places like South Yorkshire.”

The next general election in the UK is scheduled to be held no later than the 15th of August 2029.
