Man dies after Sheffield crash

Police were called to the city centre in the early hours of Monday morning

A teenager has died after a crash in Sheffield.

Police say they were called to St Mary's Gate in the early hours of Monday, where a VW Golf had crashed into a barrier.

An 18-year-old man was taken to hospital, he has now died.

A 15-year-old who suffered head injuries is still in hospital.

A 21-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the incident.

A Police statement said:

"On Monday (17 June) we responded to reports of a single vehicle road traffic collision at 1.56am. A black VW Golf was involved in a collision at St Mary’s Gate and it is reported that the driver fled the scene.

"An 18-year-old man was taken to hospital on Monday and has now sadly died. His family have been informed and are being supported by specialist officers.

"A 15-year-old boy was also taken to hospital with head injuries which are not believed to be life threatening or life altering. He remains in hospital at this time.

"A 21-year-old man, who suffered a minor injury, was arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving. He has been released on police bail pending further enquiries.

"Enquiries are ongoing and we are continuing to appeal for any witnesses to the collision, or those with relevant dashcam footage, to come forward."
