A Sheffield man has been jailed after he crashed into a car while attempting to flee police in the city earlier this year.

Laine Hempsey, 25 and of Dryden Avenue, was followed by an unmarked police car after running a red light on the morning of January 13.

He failed to stop and later hit another car, before fleeing on foot over Dorset Steet.

However he surrendered to officers after seeing a police dog and quickly admitted to being behind the wheel.

He tested positive for cannabis during a drugs test and it was later found he was uninsured and driving on a provisional licence.

He charged with driving a motor vehicle dangerously, failure to stop, driving whilst over the prescribed limit for drugs, driving otherwise than in accordance with a licence, and driving without third party insurance.

Hempsey admitted to all charges at Sheffield Magistrates' Court last week and was jailed for a year.

The 25 year old was also disqualified from driving for 18 months, and ordered to pay a fine of almost £200.
