Josh Windass has extended his stay with Sheffield Wednesday.

The popular forward has signed a new contract ahead of the 2024/25 campaign.

The 30-year-old’s long association with the Owls is set to continue, with Windass first moving to Hillsborough on loan during the 2019/20 season.

The then Wigan loanee was off to a flyer in blue and white, scoring on debut against Barnsley at Oakwell in February 2020.

During his short loan spell, Windass struck three times in six starts and his fine form prompted a permanent switch the following summer from the Latics.

The former Rangers man has since become a key part of the Owls’ attacking line-up, providing a regular source of goals and assists.

A major player during our memorable promotion campaign from League One in 2022/23, Windass hit the back of the net on 16 occasions, with the final strike one that will live long in the memory and go down forever in our history books.

Having reached the League One play-off final against Barnsley in May 2023, the game looked set for penalties, tied at 0-0 after 120 minutes.

But in the final attack of the game, Lee Gregory’s cutback floated perfectly into the path of Windass, whose diving header on 120+3 minutes was the golden goal that sent the Owls back to the Championship.

Though difficult to replicate the levels of drama from the season before, 2023/24 was every bit as tense with survival in the balance heading into the final day of the season at Sunderland.

Wednesday, of course, went on to avoid relegation against the odds and Windass’ form in front of goal was a huge factor in securing second tier status.

After a 1-1 draw at home to Stoke in mid-April, the Owls needed big returns from the final three games against Blackburn, West Brom and Sunderland to stand a chance of achieving safety.

Danny Röhl’s squad rose to the challenge and finished 2023/24 in blistering fashion, winning three from three, starting away at Blackburn where Windass broke the deadlock with a stunning effort that won the Sky Bet Championship Goal of the Month award.

He was also on target at home against West Brom and the Black Cats as the Owls completed the great escape on Wearside.

In total, Windass has featured 135 times for the Owls, making 106 starts in all competitions, scoring 40 goals.
