Hygiene poverty described as a 'silent crisis' across South Yorkshire & North Derbyshire
Buildings across the country are being illuminated yellow over the next few days as part of national hygiene week
Hygiene poverty in South Yorkshire & North Derbyshire is being described as a 'silent crisis' - with many having to choose between 'toothpaste & soap'.
New figures show that nearly 9 million people in the UK have missed a day at work or job interview because they feel dirty.
Serena Van Der Meulen is from the Hygiene Bank in Doncaster:
"Three parents in every street are having to decide between period products and nappies.
"In every single company - on average -four colleagues are avoiding the office because they feel unclean.
"In Doncaster this week - Mansion House, the Armthorpe Digital Tree and the Buttercross in Tickhill are all lighting up in yellow to raise awareness around Hygiene Poverty.
"Across the country, loads of bridges and buildings are joining in this national campaign."
Currently, 5.3 million people are forced to make tough choices every day - from food or toothpaste to gas or soap, yet research suggests 1 in 5 people in the UK still don't know what hygiene poverty is.
