Debt charities in South Yorkshire & North Derbyshire tell us they're seeing a 'huge spike' in demand for their services - with the summer holidays underway.

Figures suggest more than half of parents are having to borrow money to do their weekly food shop.

Helen Ganney is from Christians Against Poverty - who support people struggling financially in Sheffield, Rotherham, & Barnsley:

“There are no free school meals. You might have a house of bored children, and bored children normally just want to snack every 30 seconds.

“Just being able to provide that entertainment - when you are already struggling – can really take you to breaking point.

“Some parents tell us they can’t afford a hot meal right now – just so their kids can eat properly.

“7 out of 10 people tell us they’re buying cheaper more processed food – rather than fresh fruit and vegetables.

“People will wait up to 3 years to pick up the phone and ask for help with their debts.

“Only 3% do it straight away, which is a real worry. They may well end up resorting to gambling or selling their items where possible.

“People are having to make some really tough decisions with regards to whether they feed their kids or keep their lights on – it really does come down to that.”
