Those having a go at 'Dry January' this year in South Yorkshire & North Derbyshire 'need more than good intentions' to actually complete the challenge of giving up booze for the entire month.

That's what an alcohol & drug rehab centre in Sheffield tell us - with statistics showing that about 35 per cent of people who start it end up giving up around 10 days in.

Jonathan Edgeley is the founder of Eleven Recovery in Sheffield:

"Statistically, we know that a lot of people will have a go, but unfortunately will fail because they don't have a set intention & a really clear reason why they're doing it.

"My tips for completing dry January are to have a set motivation why you're doing it, stay hydrated, drink plenty of water, get plenty of exercise and be around people who're doing the same thing so you can remain motivated.

"Do it a day at a time and have a plan and stick to it.

"I lost two friends before Christmas to alcoholism. I think the seriousness of it is underplayed - I don't think it's particularly well understood by the general public.

"Some people can drink responsibly, some people can drink irresponsibly, but some people are just genetically pre-disposed to alcohol dependency.

"It can really have a negative impact on brain health, gut health and physical functioning.

"It can also lead to problems with emotional health and sleep.

"I've seen too many people die from alcoholism over the years."
