A ground-breaking 60-day trial aiming to transform on-train Wi-Fi is now under way, bringing together an unprecedented partnership between Peninsula Transport, Network Rail, Motion Applied, and Great Western Railway.

The trial, launched this month, uses cutting-edge connectivity technology inspired by the world of Formula 1, including 5G Edge Active Antennas and satellite integration.

The goal: to finally provide rail passengers with fast, stable, and reliable Wi-Fi, even when travelling through rural or high-demand areas where traditional rail connectivity often struggles.

The technology has been fitted to a 9-car Intercity Express Train, where customers can now experience the upgraded service throughout the two-month test period.

Peninsula Transport, the sub-national transport body for Cornwall, Devon, Plymouth, Somerset, and Torbay, is championing the trial as part of its mission to unlock the region’s full economic potential through smarter, future-ready transport innovation.

Also central to the collaboration is Motion Applied, whose engineering expertise is rooted in more than 35 years of Formula 1 and top-tier motorsport innovation.

The company specialises in applying high-performance racing technology to real-world transport challenges—making it a natural partner for a project aiming to dramatically improve passenger experience on UK trains.

If successful, this trial could pave the way for widespread upgrades across the national rail network, offering passengers faster streaming, more stable connections for work and travel, and a significant leap forward for digital infrastructure on the railway.
