The latest Welsh Government procurement credit card spending data reveals a number of purchases.

Overall, the amount spent on procurement cards increased from around £800,000 (in 2021-22) to nearly £1,500,000.

On December 8th 2022, £588 was spent on this website that sells recreational equipment, including Fussball machines.

Andrew RT Davies MS, Leader of the Welsh Conservatives said:

“The Labour Welsh Government are literally dining out on the backs of taxpayers as ministers complain of tight financial constraints and NHS waiting lists balloon for six consecutive record-breaking months.

“You couldn’t make this up.”

Card spending data included an April 2022 spend of £15,933.45 at Zou Zous – Pendry a New York restaurant that boasts “modern day luxury”.

On 16/12/2022, £2,701.89 was paid to Diversity Travel Ltd, a travel management company that specialises in ‘diversity study trips for personal development’.

This website sells mostly alcohol (as well as perfume/cosmetics) It supplies embassies etc with HQ based in Dubai. On 08/12/2022, £455.63 was spent here.

Peter Fox MS, Welsh Conservative Shadow Minister for Finance, said:

“Welsh taxpayers’ money deserves far more respect than this and should be used responsibly."

“We need new guidelines for what is appropriate spending and a full independent audit of all procurement card spending.”

On 17/03/23 – £207 was spent on this website. The site sells whiskey and kilts.

On 16/09/2022 – two GoPros were purchased at £699.98 each.

A Welsh Government Spokesman said:

"Procurement cards reduce administration costs and are used by government departments across the UK."

"We have rigorous processes in place to limit, monitor and control their use. Transactions are reviewed, require approval by senior managers and are subject to regular internal audit.

"Transparency is important and we publish detailed information on procurement card use every year."

“Examples of procurement card use include fuelling and maintaining the Welsh Government fisheries protection vessels, renewal of software licences, health and safety related expenditure and overseas events and exhibitions to promote Wales , including extensive St David’s Day activities."

"The latest figures reflect a return to pre-pandemic levels of travel and promotional activity.”
