Wales and Gloucestershire scrum-half Tomos Williams has been named the rugby union Premiership Player of the Season.

It comes after a stellar first season at Kingsholm, where he helped his side to a fifth-placed finish in his debut season with the club - and earned a call-up to the British and Irish Lions.

The Wales scrum-half made an instant impact upon arrival from Cardiff, forming an incisive half-back pairing with international partner Gareth Anscombe.

His award comes amid the Cherry & Whites' campaign on transforming their approach towards a more explosive game plan.

Only Bath Rugby and Bristol Bears managed more points than Gloucester, who missed out on The Play-Offs by just two points.

Williams said: "Coming from the players from each team, it means a lot. I'm really grateful and very proud.

"I didn't know what to expect from this season. I came in open-minded and I've thoroughly enjoyed it. I couldn't have picked a better club than Gloucester, and better coaches, they have been class.

"It was the style of play that appealed. That has shown through the season, they give us the freedom to play and express ourselves and I think that has benefited me and the boys."
