South Wales Police has launched its ‘Cost of Christmas’ campaign to help prevent crime and protect communities over the festive season.

The campaign aims to raise awareness of crimes that are more prevalent at this time of year, including domestic abuse, drink and drug driving, scams, nighttime economy-related violence, and theft.

As part of the initiative, South Wales Police is sharing personal safety advice to help prevent people from becoming victims of crime and providing guidance on avoiding online threats, such as cyber-crime.

Assistant Chief Constable Trudi Meyrick said:

“This campaign aims to raise awareness of crimes we often see over the festive period, including domestic abuse, drink/drug driving, nighttime economy-related violence, scams and theft.

“We really want to get people to thinking twice about committing these crimes...

... and to illustrate the consequences by showing how much crime could cost you. We also know that some people will be at risk of becoming a victim of abuse or another form of crime, so it’s important we provide personal safety advice.

Operational policing activity will be stepped up across key areas in South Wales throughout December and January as part of a ‘Winter of Action.’

An additional 70 Neighbourhood Policing Officers are now in place across South Wales to provide a visible presence and tackle anti-social behaviour.

The Neighbourhood Policing Guarantee introduced earlier this year ensures each community has a named, contactable officer for their area.

ACC Meyrick continued:

"By highlighting the impact of committing crime this time of year alongside what you can do to prevent it, we hope even more of us will be safe and happy throughout the festive season.”

The campaign aims to provide reassurance during the festive period and encourage communities to stay vigilant while enjoying the season’s celebrations.
