Fire crews called to huge grass fire in Hirwaun
It's the latest wildfire reported during the recent dry weather
A fire service in Wales has repeated warnings about the dangers of wildfires after crews were called to a blaze in Hirwaun.
The fire broke out on Wednesday evening, covering an area stretching for around four and a half miles.
It comes after it was revealed earlier this week that Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service (MAWWFRS) had attended over 250 individual grass fires over a two week period during the recent dry weather.
Call handlers at the Joint Fire Control Centre, which is shared between MAWWFRS and South Wales Fire and Rescue Service, also recently dealt with over 1,000 calls during one 24-hour period.
MAWWFRS released the following statement: "At 8.55pm on Wednesday, April 2nd, Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service and South Wales Fire and Rescue Service (MAWWFRS) crews were called to an incident in Hirwaun in Aberdare.
"Crews responded to a fire involving approximately 23 hectares of grassland that was well alight. The fire included three separate seats of fire, across an area of approximately four and half miles. Due to the fire’s remote location and no danger being posed to any properties, the decision was made to allow the fire to burn. Crews left the scene at 10.50pm.
"The fire continued to be monitored throughout Thursday, April 3rd and it continued to pose no immediate threat to people nor properties. Some areas continue to burn, but other areas have burned themselves out."
