What a night for Jeremiah Azu yesterday (8th March), clinching the gold in the men's 60 metres at the European Athletics Indoor Championships.

He's coming off the back of a record-breaking season last year, becoming the first Welshman to run the 100 metres in under 10 seconds.

The 23-year-old, from Cardiff, clocked a personal best yesterday, securing his first senior indoor individual title at the European Athletics Indoor Championships in Apeldoorn.

Andrew Robertson, who is from Grantham, Lincolnshire, but trains at Sale Harriers, Greater Manchester, took the bronze.

First championships gold

Azu had impressed during the earlier rounds, qualifying fastest for Saturday's final in 6.58 seconds.

The 23-year-old then clocked 6.49secs to secure his first senior individual title ahead of Sweden's Henrik Larsson (6.52).

Robertson, 34, put in a season's best of 6.55 to take bronze - his quickest time in eight years.

Azu's gold was a first for the British team at the championships, with Revee Walcott Nolan having taken bronze in the 1,500m to add to the third-placed finish of the mixed 4x400m relay team on the opening night.

In Saturday's morning session, George Mills qualified for the 3,000m semi-finals after winning his heat, with James West third.

In the women's event, Melissa Courtney-Bryant - the quickest in Europe this year - and Hannah Nuttall both qualified along with 18-year-old Innes FitzGerald.

'I wouldn't be here without my family'

Azu said: “This morning I felt a bit flat before the semi-final then I saw my family and we prayed. After I left them I was thinking, where would I be without these guys?

"They lifted me up. Once I saw them it just shut down any doubt, I walked into that warm-up area and felt amazing just from seeing them. They mean to world to me. I am such a family man – I wouldn’t be here without them.

“We are just scratching the surface – this is only the beginning. We have so much more to go.”

Cheesecake in Scarborough

Robertson, meanwhile, said he answered a late call-up to the British squad in Apeldoorn.

“This time last week I was having a cheesecake, I was having a great time with my family in Scarborough,” he revealed in an interview.

“I got the call on Wednesday to be a reserve, but I was always prepared (to compete) because it has been my goal for a long time.

"Aged 34, to come away with my second-fastest time ever, I can’t ask for any more.”
