Swansea house fire caused by E-bike battery

Firefighters from Swansea Central and Swansea West Fire Stations responded to a fire caused by an electric bike battery charging on Thursday, August 7th.

At 3.10am on Thursday, August 7th, the Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service crews from Swansea Central and Swansea West Fire Stations were called to an incident at David Williams Terrace in Swansea.

Crews responded to a fire caused by an electric bike battery being charged.

The battery had exploded while charging near the property’s back door.

The property’s occupants had extinguished most of the fire prior to the arrival of crews and Firefighters were involved in making the scene safe and ventilating the property.

Crews were also involved in administering first aid to the occupants.

Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service says the incident 'highlights the importance of not leaving the batteries of devices to charge unattended'.

"It has also demonstrated the effectiveness of closing doors within a property, as the closed doors had prevented the fire from spreading to other parts of the property."

Battery charging safety advice:

• Charge batteries while you are awake and alert so if a fire should occur you can respond quickly.
• Don’t leave batteries to charge while you are asleep or away from the home.
• Do not cover chargers or battery packs when charging as this could lead to overheating or even a fire.
