A470 roadworks delayed following rail crash
Drivers were going to face a 70-mile diversion
Major roadworks on a main route through mid-Wales have been postponed, following a rail crash.
The A470 was due to close for repair work near Talerddig, Powys, on 31st October, with drivers facing a 70 mile diversion until Christmas.
However, the "situation has been reviewed following the rail incident which took place on Monday evening," according to the Welsh Government.
A man in his 60s, named locally as Tudor Evans, died and fifteen others were injured near Llanbrynmair when two trains collided.
The Cabinet Secretary for Transport and North Wales Ken Skates said: "My thoughts are with all affected by the rail incident, and my sympathies are with the family of the man who lost his life.
"Pausing the work at Talerddig until the New Year is the right thing to do at this point to allow time for the community to come to terms with the sad events which have taken place. While every effort is made to minimise disruption, beginning the work next week would have brought uncertainty at a difficult time.
"We will provide further updates on a revised timetable for the roadworks."
Officials say traffic lights will remain on the road for the rest of this year, with one lane closed.
The planned work is to repair a hole in the road, after part of a wall collapsed into a river in November 2023.
