Organisers of the Great South Run - which had to be cancelled at the weekend because of Storm Ashley - have released more information to participants.

Their statement apologises again for having to cancel Sunday's event in Portsmouth and also says entrants have been contacted about re-applying for next year.

They say:

"We were really sorry to have had to cancel the 2024 Great South Run (10 miles), due to the adverse weather from Storm Ashley.

We know how much this event means to our runners, and how disappointing the news will have been for everyone who had planned and prepared for the big day, with many having already raised large amounts of money for charity.

Our team did everything they could to give the event the best chance of going ahead as planned, however the safety of participants, staff and volunteers is our number one priority. The decision to cancel was made after comprehensive discussions with the Met Office, medical & safety teams, local authorities and key stakeholders."

Participants can still earn a medal

Many groups and individuals still did their runs, having raised money for charity.

With that in mind, organiser say runners will still be rewarded:

"We know event day is only part of the challenge, and that participants will have put in many miles towards their training already. We’re therefore offering participants the chance to claim a medal and t-shirt free of charge, by completing a run of 10 miles or further."

And they've contacted those signed up to this year's Great South Run about next year:

"We’ve been in touch with participants today with details about how they can roll their entry over into next year’s event or claim a refund in line with our terms and conditions. "

Next year’s AJ Bell Great South Run is scheduled to take place on Saturday 18 and Sunday 19 October 2025.
