A coastguard helicopter has been called out as part of efforts to rescue a two kayakers and a dog in difficulty off the West Sussex coast.

Teams from Selsey, Hayling Island and Portsmouth were called to reports of a person in the water and a person and a dog stuck in the mud in their kayak at Thorney Island at around 5.45pm on Wednesday (February 18th).

They were joined by both lifeboats from the RNLI Hayling Island station.

Crews were able to find both and bring them ashore, where casualty care was administered to both.

They were then checked over by a paramedic from the waiting helicopter.

Both were found to be OK, although very cold, and were advised to get checked out at hospital after they had swallowed a lot of water.

A spokesperson for the Selsey Coastguard team praised the first informer, the son of the kayaker whose vessel capsized.

"He also did the right thing by staying in his kayak after he got stuck on the mud and waited for help to arrive.

"This could have been a completely different story this evening, so a massive well done to the son for knowing who to call and asking for the Coastguard."
