Rescue teams have been called out for searches after clothes and a mobile phone were found on Bognor beach.

Sussex Police conducted initial searches after the items were discovered on New Year's Day evening.

They were joined by lifeboats from Selsey and Littlehampton, along with the Littlehampton Coastguard, at just after 6.15pm.

Coastguard search teams were sent out east and west from Butlins to conduct a search of the water line and beach.

The teams covered the shoreline, beach and promenade between Aldwick and Felpham.

Selsey and Littlehampton Lifeboats also conducted searches out at sea.

Nothing was found and no people were reported missing, with the search teams were stood down pending further information.

A Selsey Coastguard Rescue Team spokesperson said:

“The coast and the sea can catch you out whether you’re local or not.

"Our message remains: call 999 Coastguard if you’re in trouble.

"Please help us and our families stay safe. Be aware of the risks, keep your distance.”
