Large areas of the South have experiencing snow this morning (Thursday 21st) following the issuing of a yellow weather warning.

The Met Office alert covers large areas of south-west England from between 5am and 3pm on Thursday - including Fordingbridge, Lyndhurst and Ringwood in Hampshire and Dorchester, Wareham, Bridport and Lyme Regis in Dorset.

But flurries have also been recorded in other areas, including in Southampton, Winchester and Fareham.

The issues have been causing problems on public transport across areas such as east Dorset.

Operator Morebus reported that it had to cancel several services on Thursday morning after vehicles became stuck in queues linked to the wintry weather.

Forecasters had said snow was most likely to accumulate on higher ground.

People are being advised to take care on the roads, with a higher likelihood of travel delays on some routes.

The Met Office's yellow warning for snow extends into much of inland Dorset and the New Forest

A Met Office spokesperson said:

"A spell of rain and snow is expected to develop across south and southwest England early on Thursday.

"Accumulating snow is most likely over higher ground above 200 metres where 2-5 cm is probable.

"There is a chance that similar accumulations occur at lower levels in places. Higher parts of Dartmoor could see 10-15 cm.

"There is also likely to be a risk of ice developing as skies clear into Thursday night."
