Olympic bronze for Hampshire BMX rider
Declan spent years honing his skills at Southsea skate park
Years of hard work and dedication have led a BMX rider from Hampshire to an Olympic bronze medal.
24-year-old Declan Brooks, from Portchester, finished in third place in the inaugural men's BMX freestyle event in the early hours of Sunday morning (August 1st).
It wasn't the only success of the day for Team GB with Charlotte Worthington claiming the gold medal in the women's event, Team GB's ninth of the games in Tokyo.
The event sees competitors take on two runs of 60 seconds each.
They are scored by five judges between 0.00 and 99.99 based on the difficulty and execution of the rider's run, which features flips and tricks.
Declan managed a total of 89.40 in his first run, putting him into third place.
He then improved on that with a 90.80 in his second run - which was just enough to pip Kenneth Tencio of Costa Rica for the final spot on the podium.
Logan Martin of Australia claimed gold in the event with a best score of 93.30, with Daniel Dhers of Venezuela winning silver with a score of 92.05.
Speaking before the event, Declan said he went into the competition with hopes of getting a medal:
"When I started BMX it wasn't an Olympic sport, so I never thought I'd have the opportunity to go and compete - it's very surreal.
"A medal would be great and that's just something I would like to bring home for the family."
