A murder investigation's underway after a woman was attacked at a cemetery near Fareham.

Police were called to Crofton Cemetery at Lychgate Green in Stubbington just before 4pm yesterday afternoon to reports of a serious assault.

They found a 71-year-old woman with serious injuries.

Police and ambulance crews treated her at the scene but she was pronounced dead a short time later.

Her family's been told.

A 66 year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder and remains in custody.

In a statement, Hampshire Police said: "We have launched a murder investigation after a serious assault took place in Stubbington.

"We were called to Crofton Cemetery at Lychgate Green at 3:47pm on Monday 24 July after a 71 year-old woman had been assaulted there.

"She was treated initially by police officers and our colleagues from South Central Ambulance Service, but was pronounced dead a short time later.

"Her family have been informed and are being supported by specialist officers.

"A scene will remain on at the cemetery while officers carry out enquiries.

"A 66 year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder and remains in custody at this time.
