Man hit with metal baton during attempted robbery in Winchester

Police have made an arrest after a man was hit over the head with a metal baton during an attempted robbery in Winchester.

The 20-year-old victim was approached by a man who attempted to steal his bag in Romsey Road, near the junction with Queen's Road, at around 8.40am yesterday morning (Tuesday 10th).

The victim sustained a cut to the head, for which he received treatment at hospital. He has since been discharged.

Police arrested a 30-year-old man from Gosport on suspicion of assault occasioning actual bodily harm, possession of an offensive weapon in a public place and attempted robbery.

He has since been released on conditional bail pending further enquiries.

Officers are appealing for anyone who saw what happened, or may have dashcam or CCTV footage of the incident to call 101, quoting the reference number 44240536726.
