Man, 84, seriously hurt after Southampton crash

He's in a serious but stable condition in hospital

A man remains in a serious but stable condition in hospital after being hit by a van in Southampton.

The 84-year-old was hurt on Ruby Road in Bitterne last Saturday.

A 66 year-old man's been arrested on suspicion of a number of offences - including drug driving.

He's been released under investigation.

In a statement, Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary said: "We’re investigating a serious injury collision between a van and a pedestrian that took place on Ruby Road in Southampton on Saturday 23 December.

"Just after 10:15am an 84 year-old man was involved in the collision with a black Mercedes Sprinter van. He was taken to Southampton General Hospital, where he remains, to be treated for serious injuries, including broken bones. His condition is described as stable.

"A 66 year-old man arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by careless or inconsiderate driving and driving with a proportion of a specified controlled drug above the specified limit has been released from custody without charge, but remains under investigation.

"We’re keen to hear from anyone who may have seen, or who has relevant dashcam footage of, what happened.
