A Hampshire domestic abuse charity are saying one in seven children live with domestic abuse, as they kickstart 16 days of action.

It comes on White Ribbon Day, a day for men to show their year-long commitment to ending violence against women and girls.

Stop Domestic Abuse charity say they'll have a focus on children and young people for this year's 16 days.

Claire Lambon, CEO of Stop Domestic Abuse, said: "We're really doing a focus on children, so we're running a lot of parenting support seminars for parents whose children are affected by domestic abuse, to be able to have difficult conversations with them.

"Those are split up into age groups that are appropriate to different conversations with different children.

"We know that one in seven children and young people will live with domestic abuse during their childhood.

"We know that in the last nine years, 19 children have been killed by a parent that was a perpetrator, and we know domestic abuse disproportionately affects women and children.

"We know that in 90% of domestic abuse cases, children are either in the same or the next room to the incident that is taking place.

"So it's very important that we shine a light on children and the impact that domestic abuse has on them."

Women's Aid's most recent research found it's estimated 1.8 million children are living with domestic abuse this winter.

Ms Lambon's telling us how important it is to raise awareness of the issue.

She said: "Domestic abuse is the biggest social issue affecting women and girls in this country today.

"It's an issue which not only takes lives but ruins lives in great numbers.

"Women and children should not live in fear of violence and abuse.

"Our vision at Stop Domestic Abuse is a world without domestic abuse and we won't stop until domestic abuse does.

"We want men and women to be empowered to discuss the issues of violence, exploitation and abuse.

"We must create an environment where gender-based violence is unacceptable."

Portsmouth's Spinnaker Tower will be lighting up orange for White Ribbon Day and awareness of violence against women and girls.
