Fire causes 'major damage' to house in Ventnor
Crews from elsewhere on the Isle of Wight were amongst the first to respond to the fire
A house in Ventnor has suffered major damage after a fire.
Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire Service confirmed they were called to a property on South Street at around 5:30pm on Friday.
Smoke had also spread to the roofs of nearby terraced houses.
Seven pumps from across the Isle of Wight helped tackle the fire, with ventilation fans used to clear the smoke.
Crews received an official stop message just before 8pm, with firefighters in Ventnor conducting a reinspection overnight to ensure there were no remaining hotspots.
Those living in the property were checked by the Isle of Wight Ambulance Services, who reported no major injuries.
The fire service's latest statement says:
"Firefighters from across the Isle of Wight were called to a property fire on South Street in Ventnor.
"The crews were first alerted at around half five, arriving to find smoke in the roof space of the row of terraced houses.
"Firefighters made use of hose reels and jets to tackle the fire before clearing smoke with ventilation fans.
"The fire was extinguished before the incident scaled down with two crews and the aerial ladder remaining to dampen down.
"The stop message came in at 19:54.
"Ventnor firefighters conducted a reinspection overnight to ensure there were no remaining hotspots."
They also confirmed that Ventnor's firefighters were not the first to respond due to being deployed elsewhere.
"Ventnor is an on-call fire station which means firefighters are paged to respond to incidents when required and if available.
At the time of the first call, the nearest available fire engine was mobilised."
