Cheaper bus travel in Southampton this summer
A day ticket will cost £5 for a family or group of friends
Southampton City Council voted in a temporary bus fare offer in Wednesday's (20th July) first full council meeting of the municipal year.
The offer, which was an election pledge made by the council’s Labour administration, is beginning this weekend. From Saturday, in time for the school holidays, families or groups of friends will be able to travel together on one-day ticket for £5.
The council said: ‘With the cost of living crisis hitting so many Southampton families, Southampton council is offering a way to make it cheaper and easier for hard-pressed families to make the most of the city and enjoy a ‘staycation’ and travel on most of the bus services at a reduced rate.”
The offer is available with all the main bus operators in the city.
Councillor Eamonn Keogh, cabinet member for transport and district regeneration said: “The Labour administration is supporting the main bus operators to give people the opportunity to enjoy cheaper travel during the period of the summer holidays. This great offer will help struggling families enjoy some days out in the city with unlimited travel capped at £5.”
Initially the scheme will run until the end of August, but if it is a success, the council says it may be extended to include weekends from September, depending on how many people take up the offer this summer.
