Woman jailed for murdering her estranged husband in Newport
Amy Pugh tried to claim that Kyle Pugh had taken his own life
A woman has been jailed for murdering her estranged husband in Newport, who she tried to claim had taken his own life.
34-year-old Amy Pugh has been sentenced to at least 13 years in prison.
'20 minutes to call paramedics'
32-year-old Kyle Pugh died in hospital, a day after emergency services were called to Amy Pugh's then home on Aston Drive in Newport.
Paramedics found Amy of Stafford Road in Wolverhampton carrying out CPR on an unresponsive Kyle on the night of March 22nd 2022.
A court heard how it had taken her 20 minutes to call paramedics and had made several calls to her father before calling 999.
'Murder investigation'
There had been an altercation between the two following an argument, where Amy had injured Kyle leaving him unresponsive.
A murder investigation was then launched after Kyle's family raised concerns about the circumstances of his death.
Officers found messages from Kyle sent to family members that day, discussing plans to meet them.
'Neck compression injuries'
The court also heard how Amy took a phone call from Kyle’s girlfriend on his phone at around 9pm. Kyle’s phone has never been recovered.
A postmortem carried out on Kyle’s body showed that he had suffered neck compression injuries.
Amy was arrested on April 1st 2022, on suspicion of murder. She was found guilty earlier this year.
'A tragic case'
After sentencing, Detective Inspector Jo Delahay said: “This is a tragic case, which has caused tremendous upset to Kyle’s family over the last three years.
"Whilst the court’s verdict does not bring Kyle back, I hope it brings justice for them, and for Kyle.
'No remorse'
“Rather than calling for help once Pugh realised Kyle was no longer responsive, she took extreme measures to ensure no one would ever be able to link his death back to her.
“She used Kyle’s mental health history to manipulate and lie to his loved ones, as well as authorities, all to protect herself.
"Through the whole investigation she has shown no remorse for her actions that day.”
