West Midlands Fire Service have issued advice following a fatal house fire.

A 79-year-old man and his dog lost their lives after a house fire on Elizabeth Walk, Tipton.

Three fire engines and 15 firefighters were first sent to the scene of a severe fire on Sunday 30th March.

Another four fire engines later went to the scene .

The fire involved the ground floor and upper area of a dormer bungalow.

Fire investigators confirmed that the fire started accidentally, involving items placed close to a halogen heater.

The Fire Service has given these safety tips to help prevent tragedies when using portable heaters:

  • Don’t place heaters where they block escape routes or could be easily knocked over
  • Switch off, unplug and let heaters fully cool before moving them
  • Only use heaters in rooms they’re designed for. Never in bathrooms, or bedrooms if using portable gas heaters
  • Ensure heaters are not placed near flammable materials, such as furniture, curtains, and bedding
  • Buy from recognised manufacturers and retailers and register your product in case of recalls.
