Wolverhampton Vaisakhi celebrations 'for everyone', says Sikh MP

A parade will travel from Cannock Road to West Park

A Sikh MP for Wolverhampton West said the Vaisakhi celebrations in the city today (4th May) are for everyone, regardless of religion.

MP Warrinder Juss Singh will be at the religious festival, to mark the Sikh New Year.

What is Vaisakhi?

Vaisakhi is also known as Baisakhi and celebrates the founding of the Khalsa, a Sikh community.

It also marks the Sikh New Year.

Originally it was a harvest festival in the Punjab region of India before became Sikhs' most important festival.

"It is a celebration of everyone in Wolverhampton coming together"

MP Warrinder Juss Singh represents Wolverhampton West and is also a Sikh. He told us he was looking forward to the Vaisakhi celebrations:

"It will be very colourful and grand. It is a celebration of Vaisakhi but also it is a celebration of everyone in Wolverhampton coming together.

"Everyone is welcome. It celebrates the people, it celebrates the city. It celebrates it's diversity.

"I am also very proud that we have many other religions in Wolverhampton. When I get chance, I attend the mosques in the city. I also will visit churches. I represent everyone in Wolverhampton," he said.

How can I celebrate Vaisakhi in Wolverhampton?

There will be a parade from the Guru Nanak Satsang Gurdwara on Cannock Road to West Park, starting at 8:30am.

MP Warrinder Juss Singh said there will be lots more for people to enjoy: "People will give out food.

"There will also be speeches and musical performances. There will be Sikh martial arts too and maybe even wrestling. People will have a wonderful time," he said.
