Two new weapon surrender bins installed in Wolverhampton
The city now has eight amnesty bins where people can safely dispose of knives and dangerous items
Wolverhampton now has eight weapon surrender bins, after two new sites were installed at St Joseph's Church on Coalway Road and at the junction of Green Lane and Prouds Lane in Bilston.
The secure metal boxes allow people to anonymously dispose of knives, blades and other dangerous objects; all of which are safely destroyed once deposited.
The full list of weapon surrender bins across the city includes:
- New Testament Church of God, Wednesfield Road, Heath Town
- Tabernacle Baptist Church, Dunstall Road, Whitmore Reans
- Morrisons Bilston, Black Country Route, Bilston
- St Peter’s Collegiate Church, Wolverhampton
- St Chad and St Mark’s Church, Lime Street, Pennfields
- Phoenix Park, Dudley Road, Wolverhampton
- St Joseph's Church, Coalway Road, Merry Hill
- Green Lane/Prouds Lane junction, Bilston
Councillor Obaida Ahmed, the City of Wolverhampton Council's Cabinet Member for Health, Wellbeing and Community, said knife-related crime in the city remains rare but stressed the importance of the scheme.
"Sadly, knives and other dangerous weapons are very easy to obtain nationally but, if we are able to get them off the streets, they cannot be used to commit a crime or cause injury.
“The addition of two new weapon surrender bins brings our total to eight across the city. Each one plays a vital role in helping to prevent crime and keeping our communities safe by giving people who may be carrying blades the option to dispose of them safely and without fear."
Councillor Ahmed added:
“This is just one strand of the vital work that the council, the Police and Crime Commissioner and the West Midlands Violence Reduction Partnership are delivering to prevent and divert children and young people from becoming either a victim of, or a perpetrator of, youth violence and knife crime.”
Each bin has been commissioned by either the West Midlands Police and Crime Commissioner or the Home Office.
