Phone lines at the University of Wolverhampton will be open for 24 hours from 7am today (14th August) as A-level students across the country pick up their exam results.

More than 150 operators will sit by phones offering advice on applying to a university course through clearing.

What is clearing?

Clearing is for students who have not had a university offer, looking to take an unfilled spot on a university course.

Jack Clare is Director of Admissions at the University of Wolverhampton. He told us clearing is not just for people who did not get the grades they want:

"I think sometimes there is a misconception with clearing. If you have changed your mind or not even thought about going to university, you can apply through clearing," he said.

'Clearing has become more popular'

Jack told us that a large proportion of their university uptake comes from clearing:

"Across the sector, we are finding that students are making decisions later. Clearing has become more popular, in particular over the last few years.

"We are in a strong place going into clearing but still have plenty of spaces available for people still wanting to join us," he said.

How do I apply to university through clearing?

Jack Clare has this advice if you are applying through clearing:

  • Do your research on university websites to find the available courses.
  • Get in touch with that university, as soon as you feel able to, so that you can register your interest.
  • You can contact the University of Wolverhampton on 01902 968555.
  • The University of Wolverhampton will also have various drop-in sessions that you can attend in-person on results day.
  • Or, you can message the University of Wolverhampton on their social media channels.

'We are here to help'

Jack Clare encouraged anyone needing advice to contact the university:

"Clearing can feel like a stressful time, but the main thing is not to panic and do your research.

"Our phone line will be open from 7am for 24 hours. We are here to help," he said.
