A man has been jailed after smashing a glass into another man’s neck during a confrontation in Cannock, leaving the victim with life-changing injuries.

Robert Grainger, 41, of Wolverhampton, was sentenced to three years in prison at Stafford Crown Court yesterday (Thursday 21 August) after admitting wounding/inflicting grievous bodily harm without intent.

The attack happened on 29 April outside the One Stop shop on Longford Road. CCTV showed Grainger speaking with the victim, a man in his 30s, before the confrontation escalated.

Holding a glass in his hand, Grainger smashed it into the victim’s neck, causing a deep laceration, before walking away and leaving him in the street.

The victim managed to reach a family member’s house, but collapsed shortly afterwards and went into cardiac arrest.

He was rushed to hospital and, though now discharged, has been left with life-changing injuries. His left arm is permanently paralysed, and he continues to undergo treatment at various hospitals.

Detectives identified Grainger after reviewing CCTV footage and arrested him on 3 May. When detained, he had an injury to the same hand that was holding the glass during the attack.

Chief Inspector Al Lyford, from the Cannock local policing team, praised the work of officers in bringing Grainger to justice.

He said: “Officers worked diligently to investigate this violent attack and to apprehend Grainger as swiftly as possible.

"Violence of any kind has no place on our streets and we’re determined to take robust action against those responsible for harm in local communities.”
