Flights and trains have been cancelled and hundreds of homes left without power across the West of England and West Midlands as Storm Bram hits.

Heavy rain and strong winds are causing disruption, with the Met Office warning of flooding and flying debris in some areas.

The National Grid says homes in places like Birmingham have lost electricity, and train services between Swindon and Bristol Parkway have stopped due to severe weather.

Dramatic images in Cornwall show the strength of the storm - with Penzance Council sharing images of the waves crashing over the promenade as the tide swelled this morning.

Whilst staying in the Duchy, the railway line between Par and Newquay was closed due to flooding - with disruption expected until the end of the day.

Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue have a simple message: to not drive through flood water.

They said on Facebook: "Is it really worth the risk? Do you really need another expense to pay out for just before Christmas?? It doesn't take much water to ruin an engine.

"Please do not drive through flood water. This advice is for your own safety and remember, we won't be able to save your vehicle, only you!"

It comes after they confirmed a number of drivers have had to be rescued - sharing the dramatic scenes on the roads on their Facebook page earlier this morning.

If you have train tickets for today but don't have to travel, Great Western Railway is also allowing tickets for today (Tuesday 9) to be used on Wednesday 10 December instead.

Whilst the message from National Highways is that it's harder for tyres to grip and for drivers to see ahead in these conditions - so drivers are being advised to slow right down.

The Met Office warned gusts of 70 to 80mph were expected, with some places potentially experiencing gusts of up to 90mph.

The Kernow Weather Team add they've recorded winds of between 50 to 77 miles per hour in some places.

Over in Bedworth, the decision was made to cancel the Outdoor Market because of the forecast high winds, whilst there continues to be severe delays on the M4 Prince of Wales Bridge in both directions due to emergency lighting repairs and the closure of the M48 Severn Bridge.

The Met Office say heavy rain will accompany the gusty conditions and may exacerbate problems.

In Devon, an amber rain warning was issued - with a few exposed locations likely to experience around 100mm of rain in around nine hours.

There is a "good chance" some communities will be cut off by flooded roads while homes and businesses are also likely to be flooded, the Met Office said.

There were 39 flood warnings, where flooding is expected, and 171 flood alerts, where flooding is possible, in England on Tuesday morning.

Areas affected included the Bristol Avon from Chippenham to Melksham in Wiltshire, Plymouth Sound in Devon, the River Derwent at Stamford Bridge in York, and West Bay East Beach in Dorset.

Seafront properties in Newlyn, Penzance, Longrock and Marazion in Cornwall were at risk of flooding due to spray and waves overtopping.

Travel Somerset report the A303 westbound has been closed, with Chard Junction flooded and the A358 at Donyatt also shut due to flooding.

Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service say they've attended multiple incidents linked to Storm Bram, including vehicles stuck in floodwater and reports of arcing power lines and flooding.

Network Rail also advised passengers to check journeys.

The National Grid's website showed power cuts affecting areas of Wales, south-west England and the Midlands.

There were 145 properties without power in Falmouth, Cornwall, 53 properties affected in Totnes, Devon, while 61 properties were hit in Bridport, Dorset.

A total of 62 properties were without power in Burry Port, south Wales, while 25 properties were impacted in Northfield, Birmingham, along with 39 in Hucknall, Nottingham.
