Plymouth City Council say part of the West Hoe Pier collapsed earlier today (December 9) as huge waves caused by Strom Bram battered the seafront.

The arm of the eastern pier has been undergoing strengthening work, including infilling its interior which had been filled with smaller stone, that had been dragged out by the tide over time.

In a statement on Facebook the Council said "current ferocious weather and sea conditions" have resulted in the outer wall caving in and the "damage" became clear when the tide began to go out.

They added that due to the strong winds forecast again tonight, contractors will not be able to access the full extent of the damage until low water tomorrow.

The Grade II listed pier built in the 1880s is undergoing repairs in stages after severe storm damage destabilised the sea walls.

Plymouth City Council added that after inspecting the damage tomorrow contractors will "formulate a plan and a rough programme to instigate urgent repairs as soon as possible."
