Work to improve safety and traffic flow at the A43 Padbury roundabout will start on Wednesday 28 August.

Oxfordshire County Council is working with National Highways on improvements to junction 10 of the M40.

Construction will take place overnight, on weekdays only, with one lane of the M40 southbound being closed. During the day the lane will be reopened and the southbound slip road will have a temporary 50 mile per hour speed limit.

The finished work will improve traffic flow in the local area, reduce pollution and improve safety at the junction The upgrades are needed to help the road network accommodate increased traffic from housing developments.

Councillor Judy Roberts, Cabinet Member for Infrastructure and Development Strategy at the council, said:

“The project is designed to increase the capacity of the A43 Padbury roundabout, improve the safety of the slip road and help to prepare the M40 junction 10 as planned new housing is built in the area.

“When finished, these improvements should help residents, commuters and business travellers move more quickly and safely through the area.”

The work will involve:

widening the existing nearside M40 junction 10 southbound off slip on the immediate approach to the roundabout to accommodate three running lanes; and changing the junction to have all approaches controlled by smart traffic signals.

The southbound slip approach road of the M40 will be closed every weekday night between 9.30pm and 6am. Drivers will be diverted to junction nine and back.

The A43 will also need to be closed periodically overnight, with confirmed dates available on the National Highways and county council websites nearer the time.

During all road closures, fully signed diversion routes will be put in place. Drivers should update their satellite navigation systems to receive the latest information and follow all diversion signs as they travel through the area.

All lanes will be open and functioning as normal throughout the day between 6.30am and 9.30pm. The road will not be closed during any major events in the area.

Construction will finish in spring 2025.
