An Oxfordshire fire crew are taking on the Bidwells Town and Gown 10km run today, wearing full firefighting PPE and carrying a 50kg casualty on a stretcher.

Red Watch from Rewley Road Fire Station is hoping to raise around £1,000 altogether which will be split between Muscular Dystrophy UK and The Firefighters Charity.

Oscar Baldwin organised the challenge for the crew, he said: “It’s quite restrictive in movement and it keeps your heat body heat in as well, that's going to be very warm.

“There were discussions about dropping the tunics but it's going to be a challenge. So, let's make it a challenge and we'll push on with it.”

He added: “A lap of our station is up is 200 metres, so we’ve been able to kind of replicate that, but doing it for 10K is going to be completely different and I guess we're not really going to know how it works like until we do it.”

Bidwells Oxford 10k is the oldest run in our Town and Gown series, inspired by Daniel Cleaver who had muscular dystrophy, it started in 1982.

Muscular Dystrophy UK helps find treatments and cures for muscle-wasting conditions and improving the lives of those affected.

Mr Baldwin says The Firefighters Charity “look after us firefighters, and our families.

“They don't just look after operational staff, they look after non-ops as well, such as our support staff, community safety teams, and post-retirement as well.

“So, knowing that we're going to be raising money and doing this for them is a massive push to keep us going.”
