Yorkshire Coast residents urged to be 'Adventure Smart' before going out

Residents on the Yorkshire Coast are being urged to be 'Adventure Smart' before going out.
It is aimed at those who will be doing outdoor activities during this new year like walking hills.
Before setting off people are being urged to answer three questions,
Ian Hugill, who is from Scarborough and Ryedale Mountain Rescue Team, said:
"The first is 'do I have the necessary skills for what I'm about to do? So if you're used to riding around town on your bike, you don't really want to go and try the black runs in Dalby Forest. If you're used to running 5k round the streets of Scarborough, then perhaps a marathon at the top of the North York Moors is not the thing to do.
"The second is 'what's the weather like? Not just now when you're going out to do your day's activity, but what's it like when you're coming back? What's the weather forecast for the rest of the day? And what are you likely to be walking through or riding through? At the end of the day when you're tired anyway, is that weather going to be an issue?
"The third is have you got the right kit for what you're doing? Have you got waterproofs? A map and compass and you know how to use them? Have you got a torch and spare batteries? So that if something does happen, you're prepared for that.
"We believe that if you answer those three questions to your own satisfaction, then chances are you're going to end up safe and have a good day out, enjoy the North York Moors and the scenery all of that brings and hopefully not see us."
