York Central MP Rachael Maskell says pushing for more affordable housing will be one of her main priorities in 2022.

Speaking to Greatest Hits Radio York, the Labour MP said:

"We made it to Christmas, which has meant to much for so many people. We've got lots ahead of us, which will be so important for our city here in York.

"My priorities will be to look at the housing situation and really calling key players together. We cannot continue with the building of luxury apartments when people are in real housing poverty and housing need.

"It must be a priority for our whole city to get the housing stock we need which will also help to support the economy.

"Jobs are so important, and so many people have been in precarious employment. I was delighted to take a debate to Parliament and got the support of Government for BioYorkshire - bringing 4,000 jobs to our city.

"Having that focus around jobs will really help give people an opportunity in their future, as well as tackling the big issue of climate change. I'll be looking to develop that (BioYorkshire) project, as well as looking at other job clusters around rail and arts subjects.

"We are obviously aware that public services are creaking at the seams, and we need to see that investment coming into York - whether it's police, health or funding for local government. These are the issues that I'll be championing in Parliament".
